That’s Boss: Jameel Mohammed Balances Jewelry Design And Term Papers

Balancing a political science course load and creating sleek designs is the feat tackled by Jameel Mohammed, a junior at the University of Pennsylvania. The Chicago native feeds his inspiration from the African diaspora through creating 18k gold, silver, rose quartz and leather jewelry, for a collection titled KHIRY.

The cost of textbooks, an ivy league education, and materials is more than just a few dollar bills. To help alleviate the burden Mohammed sought out help through a Kickstarter campaign in hopes of raising $20,000. Mohammed watched an outpour of support in a matter of 48hours, surpassing his goal.

In an interview with ESSENCE Magazine, the 21-year-old expressed his immense gratitude, “I’m incredibly excited that we’ve made it this far! This is the first moment where it’s really clear to me that I’m not just shouting into the void – KHIRY actually resonates with people. As an artist, that’s your whole goal — just to connect with people, and to bring to life this vision that only exists in your own head. So to see that KHIRY has become bigger than just me, and grown into something significant to other people has been truly humbling.”

Though enrolled in a field that is completely opposite of his growing business, Mohammed’s dabble in fashion comes as no surprise considering he has worked as a design intern for Nicole Miller and Narciso Rodriguez while he was in high school.

Mohammed describes the women adorning his designs to be “a woman who embraces fashion as a means of self-expression, and who is unafraid – excited event – to take risks and try new things.”

If that description resonates with you be sure to check out KHIRY and read the full interview at ESSENCE.
