If anyone knows about love, it’ll be an R&B/soul legend like New York-bred Will Downing. He’s been crooning about love and all of its beauty; possibly igniting the soundtrack for our parents to create us once upon a time.
As a husband who courted his wife well before text messages was the primary mode of communication, Will Downing sees a breakdown in intimacy ranging from the technology we’re attached to and today’s love songs.
“You guys don’t even look at each other. You just text and it’s kind of sad. You guys don’t even know how to slow drag, you ever slow drag to a slow song? Ya’ll missing it. Your generation is lost, gone, and I have three of ya’ll – a 31-year-old, a 24-year-old, and a 19-year-old. Just crazy,” he said.
The singer-songwriter has never strayed from writing powerful songs that tug on your heart strings. The type of songs people used to slow drag to before twerking became a thing. In his examination of how lovers love in 2016, he mentions how blunt music has become.
“I’m going to sound real old school because I’m sure the generation before me will say the songs I recorded weren’t real love songs. There’s no intimacy, there’s no ‘Confessions.’ I don’t hear songs as much as I hear grooves and people being very blunt. A real love song – we’re all trying to get to the same place and get to the same thing, but there’s a slicker way to say it,” he explained.
Living and singing what he’s about as far as the love he shares for his wife and children is how he maintains that genuine love in his household. And, despite seeing some losses in intimacy, he admits that much like anything else love has simply evolved to reflect the times.
There is no right or wrong way to love your significant other, family, or friend. If it is a text, text. If it is holding hands, hold hands.
“Love will always exist,” he explained. “I think you have to have two willing parties to make it work. Even in my generation, people are more apt to call it quits – you do your thing and I’ll do mine. But the generation before us was do or die we’re together that’s it. You’re the choice that I’ve made, you for me and me for you let’s make it work.”
